The Founding Moment
Where Vision Met Opportunity

After years of friendship and professional mentoring, Nathaniel and Roderick made the leap from advisory conversations to business partnership. Starting with just two people and one part-time employee in a small office, they were determined and focused to prove that  personalised service and genuine expertise could build something lasting.

The Story of Our Founders

In Their Own Words

Rather than accepting the industry standard of impersonal service and rushed consultations, Nathaniel and Roderick decided to create something different. They envisioned a firm where:

  • Every client receives genuine personal attention, not just professional competence
  • Quality of service matters more than quantity of clients
  • Long-term partnerships replace transactional relationships
  • Professional expertise combines with authentic care for client success

But the best way to understand the vision behind Borg Galea & Associates is to hear directly from the people who created it. We sat down with Nathaniel and Roderick to discuss how it all began, what drives them each day, and the kind of company they continue building together.

How did you first meet and what made you decide to start the company together?
Nathaniel

“This is one of my favourite stories to tell. Roderick and I have been friends for twenty years. When we met, I was still a student and Roderick was already a qualified accountant. Even though we weren’t working together and he had no obligation to help me, Roderick would spend an hour on the phone explaining payroll processes or VAT implications.“

Roderick

“What we both realised was that Nathaniel was not just calling me because we were friends, but because there was a genuine lack of support from other service providers. We thought: rather than continuing to rely on each other for guidance that should come from professional firms, why don’t we create something different – a practice focused on quality work and that personalised touch with every client?”

Looking back at the journey so far - what’s a moment or achievement you’re especially proud of at Borg Galea?
Nathaniel

“It’s difficult to point to just one achievement because there are so many moments that make me proud.
During our recent company photoshoot, seeing all our people together made me incredibly proud – we couldn’t even fit everyone in the camera frame. I thought to myself: look what we’ve managed to achieve.“

Roderick

“I completely agree with what Nathaniel said. One thing that particularly stands out is client gratitude. I’m thinking of a specific client who constantly thanks us for simply making time available to him. What we consider normal and obvious apparently isn’t common in the industry. When clients keep recommending us to their family and friends, that shows we’re doing something right.
If I had to mention specific milestones, our office moves tell the story of our growth. In 2017, we started with a small office – just Nathaniel, myself, and one part-time person. Then we moved to Centris in 2021, and finally to these beautiful offices in 2024. Those moments give you goosebumps – seeing what two people can achieve when they decide to strive and push forward together.”

You’ve grown quickly - what’s one challenge that comes with that?
Nathaniel

“The biggest challenge is ensuring everyone has the right mindset. Anyone who wants to be successful in service provision needs to put themselves in the customer’s shoes. When you understand both sides, you can manage expectations properly. Only then can you deliver something that exceeds expectations.
We see many companies come to us saying, ‘My previous accountant never did this’ or ‘I was never informed about that.’ We train all our staff to avoid assumptions about what clients know or want. Instead, we have thorough discussions to align our goals before beginning any work.“

Roderick

“From an operational perspective, the challenge is creating infrastructure that can handle rapid growth. If you don’t keep pace with expansion, you’ll fail at the most important things Nathaniel mentioned – client connection, service delivery, and quality. It’s like putting too many people in a small boat – you’ll sink. As we gain more clients, we need to ensure we have the right ‘ship’ to handle everyone properly.”

Can you walk me through a typical day – what does each of you focus on, and how do you complement each other?
Nathaniel

“The beauty of our roles is that every day brings something different, though certain functions repeat daily. Both Roderick and I start each day communicating with clients, seeing if there’s anything we can do to help them.
I spend the rest of my day looking at ways to improve our services and implement new technology. We’re not just following the industry – we’re staying several steps ahead. Being based across three continents gives us exposure to different approaches, especially from North America, which helps us anticipate technological trends.
I also dedicate time to speaking with team members about their needs and developing our business further. We’re constantly evaluating new service opportunities, but only if they add genuine value to clients – not just revenue to us.“

Roderick

“As Nathaniel mentioned, we both start with client communication, but then I focus primarily on operations. I’m constantly moving around our teams, assisting anyone who’s stuck, ensuring everyone stays synchronised.
It’s like maintaining a wheel – if one spoke breaks, the whole wheel jams. My role is ensuring that Nathaniel’s business development efforts ultimately result in client satisfaction through timely, accurate service delivery.”

When it comes to working with clients – what really matters to you?
Nathaniel

“We’re extremely selective about the type of clients we accept. We receive many requests from companies worldwide, but we decline quite a large number simply because they don’t fit the rest of our client portfolio.
We really want to ensure that our clients set an example in the industry as good companies. When someone sees that a company is serviced by Borg Galea, we want them to think: ‘If Borg Galea is servicing this client, that means they’re reputable.’ We want to be a mark of certification for good standing and quality.“

Roderick

“I would add that honesty is absolutely key. I always ask myself: would I feel comfortable if all our clients were in the same room discussing what we’re doing for them? If the answer is yes, we’re doing something right. If no, we’re doing something wrong. When you’re completely honest, clients feel it immediately.
We create personal relationships with our clients while maintaining our independence and ethical standards. That personal touch matters enormously.”

If someone came to you for advice on starting their own business today – what would you tell them?
Nathaniel

“Never give up on your dreams, and don’t do to others what you would resent if it was done to yourself. If you don’t want to receive second-class service, don’t give poor service to your clients.
Treat all clients with respect, ensure whatever you do is in their best interest, and success will follow. Don’t try to take shortcuts – genuine success comes from doing things properly.“

Roderick

“Never stop dreaming, maintain consistency, and show perseverance.
Remember that employees aren’t just numbers. Everyone is part of the team, including myself. We operate in an open-plan environment – we have offices not to distinguish ourselves as owners, but because we need quiet time to do our jobs properly. People who are grateful for how they’re treated and the opportunities they’re given will drive your business forward.”

What do you hope Borg Galea stands for in the future?
Nathaniel

“We have so many dreams yet to achieve – we’re nowhere close to saying all our goals have been met.
I hope this culture we’ve built will survive Roderick and myself when we’re no longer as active. The only way a firm can survive its founders is if we manage to instil our way of doing business so deeply that the firm continues these principles long after we’re gone.“

Roderick

“I dream about Borg Galea diversifying beyond our current services whilst maintaining everything we’ve built. There’s a Maltese expression about not building a castle by destroying another one – what we are today will still stand in the future, but even better.
We’ve already made a name in the industry – when you hear ‘Borg Galea,’ it’s recognised. We want to continue being recognised as one of the best whilst constantly improving and building on what we are right now.”

Vision meets Execution:
The Power of Complementary Leadership

„People say a ship can only operate with one captain, and that having two captains will make it sink. I couldn’t disagree more with that philosophy.“

Nathaniel Borg
Audit Director & Co-Founder

„We don’t compete with each other – we complement each other. Think of our leadership as two people on the same end of a rope, pulling together. We can exercise much more force than someone trying to do everything alone.“

Roderick Galea
Accounting Director & Co-Founder

The strength of Borg Galea & Associates lies in the complementary expertise and personalities of its founders, who do not simply oversee operations from a distance but remain actively involved.

Nathaniel Borg heads the audit practice, oversees the tax department and international taxation matters, and focuses on the firm’s strategic direction – driving international expansion, embracing emerging technologies, and anticipating regulatory changes.

Roderick Galea is director of the accounting department, personally managing complex financial reporting and advisory cases, and ensures the firm delivers excellence today – through operational leadership, direct client relationships, and seamless service delivery across all departments.

This blend of forward-thinking strategy and operational precision enables Borg Galea & Associates to serve clients at the highest level while continually evolving, so they benefit from both innovative solutions and reliable, personal service.

“What stands out to me is how Nathaniel and Roderick stay approachable, no matter how busy things get. You can walk into their office with a question, and they will genuinely listen – that is rare in a firm our size.”

Adrian Pavia Dimech
Audit Principal

“What I appreciate most about working at Borg Galea & Associates is that Roderick and Nathaniel actually live the values they talk about. Integrity and trust are not just words on a page – you see them in how they deal with clients and how they treat us as a team.”
